Faith for you

What started as a small group of committed Christians over 40 years ago, is now a vibrant ministry focused on the transforming work of the Gospel. And as the Lord changes us, we hope to make an impact in your life for your good, and His glory!

Our Story

Faith Baptist Church was organized as an Independent Baptist church in July of 1967. Pastor Bennie Moran had ten people attend the first service which met in his own home in Westover, West Virginia. At the time, there were little to no Gospel-preaching churches in Morgantown.

Our about

God's Continued Grace

Two months later, the congregation began meeting at the Westover Community Building where services were conducted for the next seven years. These were years of both spiritual and numerical growth. In 1973, the church moved to Richard Avenue. The church would remain there for more than twenty years. Groundbreaking for our new building, located on Green Bag Road, was in the spring of 1994. The move from the Richard Avenue location to the Green Bag Road building occurred in June, 1995. The formal building dedication service was in September, 1995.

In May 2016, Pastor Moran retired after 49 years of faithful ministry. Treg Spicer became our pastor on May 23, 2016.

Morgantown Christian Academy

Faith Baptist Church has been the home of Morgantown Christian Academy since the school’s beginning in 1978, Starting with just three kindergarten students, the school grew to enrollment of students in grades K-8. In the fall of 2006, the Morgantown Christian Academy High School began, and with it, construction of a building to house the high school classes, and an expanded school and church library.

Our Values

Faith Baptist Church exists to glorify God by equipping “disciple-making disciples” for intentional gospel living.

Biblical Exposition
Sola Scriptura (by Scripture alone) is the heartbeat of Faith Baptist Church.  We believe the Word of God should be the central focus of every part of our life (Ps. 138:2).  In order for believers to grow in grace (2 Peter 3:18) and be continually changing in His image (2 Cor 3:18), faithful teaching of God’s Word is required.  The goal is not to teach the Bible for mere knowledge (I Cor. 1:8), but to apply it to the needs of the hour by equipping the saints to do the work of the ministry (Eph. 4:11-13) and interacting with this culture with a biblical worldview.

Meaningful Worship
With Christ and His Word as the foundation, we believe our worship should be genuine and meaningful. True worship is neither superficially fabricated nor is it a mere emotional experience or a performance. Rather, true worship comes from the overflow our heart as we choose (our will) to love (our emotions) God based on our knowledge (our mind) of Who He is. It is ascribing value to God, who alone is worthy to receive our worship and praise (Rev. 4:11). Therefore at Faith we are very careful to ensure it is God, not man, who is exalted in our worship (Ps. 57:5-11).

Intentional Evangelism
As followers of Jesus, God has 1 main goal (will) for our lives: to glorify Him by making disciples. Jesus painted the perfect picture of evangelism for us in the gospel of John.  His evangelistic approach to the women at the well is the pattern we all should follow.  He was intentional (4:4), relational (4:7-10), cross-cultural (9), and substantial (14-30).  It is the goal for each believer at Faith to take this example of building intentional, redemptive relationships not only here in Morgantown (our Jerusalem) but also all over this state, country, and the rest of world.

Missional Compassion
The gospel both humbles us to our desperate need for God and moves us to meet the needs of the poor, marginalized, broken, and downcast. We believe Christians should be famous for reaching & meeting the needs of their neighbors (Matt. 25:35-40).  This flows from a heart of love that Faith has for it’s community in Morgantown, WV.  Before meeting the spiritual needs of the multitude, Christ showed compassion on them by first meeting their physical needs (e.g. hunger—Matt. 14:13-21). The gospel is flowing through showing a heart of compassion.

Faithful Discipleship
Discipleship is not a program; it is a “life-long process of becoming more like Christ and helping others do the same.” We understand that life can be complicated, full of poor and questionable life choices. In short, life is messy. However, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we desire believers to faithfully encourage and edify “one another” to mature in Christlikeness. We will provoke one another to love and good works through scriptural instruction and life example.
